Ocean Classroom Foundation programs sail with thousands of middle school, high school and college students over tens of thousands of nautical miles each year, exploring New England waters in the spring and summer, and the Caribbean Sea in winter months. Trips range from single-day class trips to fully accredited semesters-at-sea. Our award winning programs are structured adventure expeditions, integrated with academic studies in marine science, maritime literature and history and marine applied mathematics.
We work closely with partner schools, colleges, research organizations, museums, and other educational institutions to develop programs that meet their precise needs and interests. Though many of our programs have been running for over a decade, we are always eager to explore new program ideas and collaborations.
In all of our programs, the challenges of seafaring are direct and powerful. As full participants in the ship's operation, students are invigorated, excited, and challenged by their education. They own their achievements in a way that is rare in modern society.
As members of the crew, students quickly learn that success depends on teamwork, and that teamwork depends on mutual trust and respect. All of this combines to enhance an academic curriculum which runs concurrently with the operation of the ship. Courses of study are designed to take advantage of the sea and the immediacy of the student's experience.
THREE PRINCIPLES are fundamental to all Ocean Classroom programs:
Full Participation: all students participate fully in the life and operation of the ship. Seamanship Training: all students receive continual training in the arts and sciences of traditional seafaring. Appreciation of the Sea: all students are introduced to the ocean as an environment subject to ecological imperatives, and as a place of natural wonder and profound beauty.
