SHIP, SHIPMATES, SELF
Do you remember the number one lesson you learned on Ocean Classroom?
Ship, Shipmates, Self has been our mantra for over 17 years.
You learned first-hand about the challenge of life aboard a sailing vessel: the tight community of the ship, the constant demands of standing watch, maintaining the ship, looking out for your shipmates.
You experienced, maybe for the first time, the satisfaction of being part of something greater than yourself.
And oh, the sights you saw! Well, right now, your ship needs your help. Whether you sailed on Spirit, Gamage, or Westward, the people and ships of the non-profit Ocean Classroom Foundation were there for you: can you be there for them? Read on to learn about the 2012 Alumni Challenge, and how you can help. It’s never been more necessary, or more urgent.Visit our Blog (http://www.oceanclassroom.blogspot.com/) or Facebook pages (Ocean Classroom or Ocean Classroom Alumni ) to connect with your shipmates. Let the community know what you’re up to now, and how your Ocean Classroom experience helped shape your life.
OCEAN CLASSROOM ALUMNI CHALLENGE
We need your help to get the "Spirit of Massachusetts" back on the water. The demand for our programs is exceeding our number of vessels and we have more students than boats!
The estimated costs to repair Spirit's hull, replace her decks and get the topmasts back up is $650,000. The Need: To help cover the cost of the coming yard period for Spirit of Massachusetts, estimated at $650,000. This includes some much needed work to her hull and replacing her deck, and getting those topmasts back up. We have dozens of schools and hundreds of students eager to come aboard: the demand for our programs is now exceeding our supply of vessels! THE CHALLENGE We challenge each Ocean Classroom Alumni, whether high school or college, to donate a minimum of $100 to Ocean Classroom right now. Can’t manage the $100 all at once? How about $50? How about $10 a month, deducted automatically from your debit or credit card account? Or could you swing $25 a month? What was your experience at sea worth to you? THE PRIZE The Prize: We’ll track all donations from each semester program, and the crew with the highest total donations wins a reunion sail for all shipmates in the summer of 2013 (not to mention bragging rights). If you’re still in touch with any of your shipmates, help us by getting them involved, and improve your chances for the win! THE RESULT If we raise the needed funds, Spirit sails again in the summer and fall of 2013, bringing the excitement and rewards of the Ocean Classroom experience to hundreds more young people. If we fail to meet the goal? Another majestic tall ship is mothballed, her potential unfulfilled. So please help keep the wind in Spirit’s sails: make your donation and contact your shipmates today!
